Educational Priorities...

In 1891, the state of California enacted its first law regarding kindergarten.  The California Kindergarten Association Board of Directors, through the support of their mission statement, believes it is time to publicize positions on several issues and is willing to work with legislators and other like-minded organizations to promote these issues.

CKA believes that every effort must be made to enact a a law to mandate kindergarten in California.

CKA believes that a child should be 5 years old on or before September 2 of the year in which he/she enters kindergarten.  This change in entrance age should occur over a 3 year period:  Year 1, entrance age be 5 years old on or
before November 2; Year 2 - October 2; and, year 3 - September 2.

CKA believes that class size for kindergarten should be at the ratio of one highly qualified credentialed teacher to twenty students.

CKA supports a full day kindergarten.

CKA supports a pre-kindergarten experience for all pre-kindergarten age children.

Early childhood years leave imprints for life.  The effects of the first years of a child’s school life are of great importance as good beginnings are vital to productive time in later educational years.
